Toenail fungus is a condition which is more common in people who work in damp areas for a long time. It is also equally common in people who occasionally go and work in the damp and moist areas. The fungal spores grow well in the damp climates and they infect the people who step over them.

Prevention is always better than cure. Hence you can prevent yourself from getting toenail fungus rather than getting a toenail fungus and run from pillar to post to get the toenail fungus treated. Just follow a few simple precautions and you will be safe from toenail fungus infections.

As already said since the toenail fungus grows and flourishes in the damp and moist areas, you should take extreme precautions while using such areas like swimming pools, spas, public locker rooms or showers. Always pat dry your feet after every session in the pools and showers. If possible you can wear swim booties or water shoes. Never go in damp areas with your bare foot. Always wear sandals whenever you go.

It is very essential to change your socks regularly to prevent the toenail fungus. Wear cotton or woolen socks which absorb the sweat completely. Avoid using nylon socks as they prevent your feet from breathing and become a inviting place for the fungus to flourish.

Toenail fungus generally affects people who are immune compromised such as those suffering from diabetes mellitus. Hence it is important for those suffering from diabetes to keep their blood sugar within check. People with diabetes should regularly trim their nails but not too short lest they should hurt their toes and become a host for the fungus to flourish.

Never share your towels or wash clothes with others as toenail fungus is contagious. Keep your foot dry by wearing shoes which provide open ends for the toes. If at all you have to wear shoes then wear cotton socks and then wear the shoes. You can keep your feet dry by powdering your feet with the powders available in the market and then wear your socks.

Always sleep with bare foot. Make sure that you remove your shoes and socks before you go to bed regardless of how much tired you are so that you can keep a check on toenail fungus. Avoid using nail polishes as they can act as sealers and make your toenails for the toenail fungus to flourish. Do not share your pedicure kit with others. If you happen to use pedicure kit in common like that in beauty parlors make sure that they are properly sterilized before you use them.

Wear correct fitting shoes because an ill fitting shoe will hurt your toenails and make the toenail fungus to establish. The toenail fungus spreads from person to person and from toe to toe. Hence when one toe is affected take utmost care to treat the affected toenail and prevent the other toes from getting the toenail fungus infection.
